Artist Statement

“In my work, happenstance and accidents are a key theme. Having combined printed images from magazines and other sources of mass media, mixed with illustration, my work reproduces familiar visual signs as external forces and their ability to alter our sense of self. A curious concoction of ‘stuff management’, my work is the gathering of frozen moments, distributed in a whimsical space.”

Amber Powell grew up in Winfield, BC. She studied art at Okanagan College in 1987-88, and continued her education at the University of Victoria where she studied printmaking and drawing. Amber graduated from the University of Victoria in 1991 with a BFA, majoring in printmaking. She went on to do commercial art and design for 10 years and continued to produce her own work as a member of a Vancouver studio and gallery. After returning to the Okanagan in the year 2000, Amber became a founding member of Gallery Vertigo, an artist run gallery and studio.

Amber was employed at the Vernon Public Art Gallery as a preparator and has finished at the University of Victoria in a Professional Specialization certificate program in Collections Management.

Amber is now living and producing work in her home studio in Genoa Bay, Duncan BC.
